The historical origin and Evolution of Compressed Earth Block
A compressed earth block (CEB) is a construction block material made of compressed soil.
It is formed by a manual hand press or mechanical hydraulic machine compressing a mixture of soil, water, and sometimes additives such as cement or lime, or fly ash.
Compressed blocks are usually interlocked in shape and can be used for a variety of construction purposes, including building walls, foundations, and even entire structures. CEBs are known for their cheap and interlocking technology, as they utilize the rich local soil, and reduce the need for traditional red-fired brick or concrete hollow blocks.
In terms of compressive ratio , Lego interlocking bricks made of these materials could be used for manufacturing bricks and other structural elements. The optimal mix to achieve this was a soil-sand ratio of 3.36, translating to 70% soil and 30% sand.
Cement will be preferable for sandy soils and quickly achieving higher strength. Lime will be rather used for very clayey soil, but will take longer to harden and give strong blocks. These low percentages are part of the cost-effectiveness of CSEB.
