Compressed Earth Interlocking Bricks (CEIB) are a type of building block material made from special compressed earth. Currently, they are very popular in Africa for the simple reason that the soil in the continent is chemically compatible with cement. Even in some highland areas of Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda, the soil is very good even without the addition of cement after being highly compressed. Generally, they are formed by using a manual press or a mechanical hydraulic press to compress a mixture of soil, water, and sometimes additives such as cement, lime, or fly ash. Compressed Earth Interlocking Bricks are usually in an interlocking shape and can be used for various construction purposes. They are fast to construct and do not require adhesives. CEB is known for its cheap interlocking technology.
In terms of raw material proportions, compressed soil interlocking bricks made from these materials can be used to make bricks and other structural members. The best combination to achieve this is a soil to sand ratio of 3.36, i.e. 70% soil and 30% sand.
Cement is better suited to sandy soils and can quickly reach higher strengths. Lime is better suited to very clayey soils but takes longer to harden and form a solid. These low percentages are part of the cost-effectiveness of CSEB.
